Dimbola Museum & Galleries Paranormal Investigations
Explore the history, experiences and observations behind DAW Paranormal’s investigations at one of the Isle of Wight’s most distinctive Victorian locations.
A Remarkable Victorian Home
From 1860 to 1875, Dimbola was the home and workplace of pioneering Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron. The property developed from neighbouring houses into the distinctive home associated with Cameron and the artistic circle that gathered around Freshwater.
Cameron adapted parts of the property for her photography, using a former coal house as a darkroom and a glazed fowl house as a studio. Dimbola became closely associated with the writers, artists and intellectuals of the Freshwater Circle.
Today, Dimbola Museum & Galleries preserves that connection with Cameron while celebrating photography, art and the cultural history of the area.
Investigating Dimbola
Dimbola provides a varied environment for investigation, from historic rooms and galleries to spaces closely connected with Julia Margaret Cameron’s life and work. Our approach combines quieter observation with structured experiments and environmental monitoring.
Depending on the investigation, techniques may include audio and video recording, EMF and environmental monitoring, thermal imaging, EVP work, SLS observation, sensory-deprivation or spirit-box experiments, trigger objects, vigils and traditional techniques such as mirror scrying.
Equipment responses are recorded as observations rather than treated as evidence in isolation. Context, possible interference and ordinary explanations are considered when anything unusual occurs.

Experiences & Observations
Previous DAW Paranormal investigations at Dimbola have produced a number of observations that have encouraged us to return and investigate further.
These have included footsteps apparently coming from an unoccupied area of the building and unusual flashes or changes in light observed against a plain wall. During an investigation in Julia Margaret Cameron’s former bedroom, figures were also intermittently mapped by an SLS camera.
Traditional techniques have formed part of our investigations too. During one mirror-scrying experiment, two participants independently reported similar changes in the appearance of the same person.
We do not regard experiences such as these, or responses from investigative equipment, as proof of paranormal activity. Where possible, we consider environmental conditions, equipment limitations, perception and ordinary explanations. Observations that cannot immediately be explained are documented so that they can be compared with future investigations.
How We Approach Dimbola
We begin with the location rather than a predetermined explanation. Observations are recorded alongside environmental conditions and the circumstances in which they occurred. Where possible, we look for repeatability, corroboration and potential sources of interference before deciding whether something remains unexplained.
